José Mourinho has admitted calling Mike Riley, the referee, a “son of a whore”, although it was Martin Jol who was left cursing as Chelsea came from two goals behind to earn a thrilling 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in yesterday’s FA Cup quarter-final tie at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho praised his players’ resilience but reserved his strongest words for Riley, whom he called a “ filho da puta” during a confrontation in the players’ tunnel at half-time.

The Football Association today have admitted they will study referee Mike Riley's report before deciding whether to take action against the Chelsea manager for his alleged use of the Portuguese word 'puta'.

“I say these kind of words ten times in every 15 words,” Mourinho said. “The word can be abusive, but I don’t mean it to be abusive. I say it to my players and say it to myself when I’m not happy with something. I say it 50 times a game, 50 times in training. It’s the same word I use to criticise the ball when it hits the post.”
